DID YOU KNOW?
About 37 million Americans get at least one sinus infection each year. Antibiotics are often prescribed as a sinus infection treatment, however, since less than 2% of sinus infections are bacterial in nature they do little to no good.
What Are Sinus Infections?
Sinus infections are an inflammation, or swelling, of the tissue lining the sinuses. Normally, your sinuses are filled with air, but when your sinuses become blocked and filled with fluid, germs, in the form of bacteria or viruses, can grow and cause an infection.
Conditions That Can Cause Sinus Blockage Include:
* The common cold
* Small growths in the lining of the nose
* Swelling of the lining of the nose
* A shift in the nasal cavity (deviated septum)
There are three different types of sinus infections:
* Acute
* Subacute
* Chronic
Acute sinus infections usually last less than five weeks. Acute sinus infections include cold-like symptoms that appear suddenly. These cold symptoms include a runny, and/or stuffy nose, and sinus pain that lasts more than 10 days.
Subacute sinus infections are an inflammation of the sinuses that lasts anywhere from four to eight weeks.
Chronic sinus infections are inflammation of the sinuses that lasts longer than eight weeks. Some people have recurrent sinus infections that occur several times a year.
What Are The Symptoms Of Sinus Infections?
The primary symptoms of a sinus infection include:
* Nasal discharge
* Fatigue
* Fever
* Dental pain
* Loss of smell
* Nasal stuffiness
* Facial pain/pressure
* Bad Breath
* Cough
What About Antibiotics as a Sinus Infection Treatment?
If you go to your doctor they will probably quickly prescribe antibiotics as a sinus infection treatment, however, less than 2% of sinus infections are bacterial in nature so antibiotics do little to no good. Beyond that we don't recommend antibiotics because they destroy not only bad bacteria, but good bacteria as well.
Don't use addictive nasal sprays as a sinus infection treatment either. They are filled with chemicals you don't need to snort into your brain. There are some natural nasal sprays and herbs that work just as well as a sinus infection treatment and aren't addictive. You can find them at your local health food store.
Is There A Natural Sinus Infection Treatment?
At Diet Health And Fitness we recommend Echinacea, Goldenseal, and Interferon as a natural sinus infection treatment.
Another natural sinus infection treatment is to strengthen your immune system. Your body's immune system is perfectly capable of handling and treating a sinus infection, you just need to make sure that your immune system is strong enough to be up for the task when a sinus infection arises.
At Diet Health and Fitness we strengthen our immune system by:
* Watching our diet (eating primarily organic fruits and vegetables)
* Taking high quality vitamin supplements
* Drinking a lot of water (limiting soda, store bought juice drinks, and alcohol)
* Keeping our intake of sugar at a minimum
* Exercising regularly
If your sinus infections are recurring, or chronic, and the above recommendations aren't doing the job you should consider the following resources as a natural sinus infection treatment:
